Mark's career in finance started in 1991 at Miller, Johnson and Kuehn, a Minneapolis based investment banking firm. In 1995 he joined the newly formed startup company Wam!Net, soon to be a global provider of IT services for the media industry. There he served as Controller and Vice President of Finance from 1995 to 1997, and Executive Vice President of Finance from 1998 to 2003. During his tenure at Wam!Net he helped manage and direct the growth from a startup company to over $1 billion in government contracts, such as the Navy and Marine Corp Global Secure Network Initiative, and 450 worldwide employees. He also managed the process of capitalizing Wam!Net's operations by managing the efforts of raising $208M dollars from a high yield publicly traded bond offering with Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse as lead underwriters and closing several $100M dollar strategic and private equity placements with MCI Worldcom, Silicon Graphics and Winstar Communications, between 1996 and 2000. In 2001 Mark led and managed Wam!Net’s process of filing for its $100M dollar Initial Public Offering with Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch as lead underwriters. In 2002 Mark helped manage the acquisition of Wam!Net by Savvis Communications, Inc., the M&A transaction was funded by Cerberus Capital Management.
In 2003 Mark joined Virtual Radiologic Corporation (NASDAQ: VRAD) as its CFO, CAO, and Treasurer. During his tenure he managed VRADs growth from less than $5M in annual revenues in 2003, to over $100M of annual revenues in 2008. During this time, he completed several successful private equity placements, two successful strategic telemedicine acquisitions, and a successful $100M dollar Initial Public Offering led by Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and William Blair. Within 6 months of the IPO, Virtual Radiologic’s market capitalization was in excess of $500M.
In 2010 Mark founded Omphalos Venture Partners, LLC, an early stage emerging market venture fund to serve the greater Minneapolis area, and now serves as its President and Managing Partner. Under his tenure Omphalos Venture Partners has led investments in dozens of technologies, medical device, healthcare service, SAAS, robotics and sensor technology companies. With Mark’s focus on providing early stage capital, advice, entrepreneurial/CEO mentoring, and board governance, Omphalos Ventures Partners has been a strong and positive influence in Minnesota’s entrepreneurial health care industry.
Mark holds a B.S./B.A and M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and has held a N.A.S.D. Series 7 General Securities License. He also served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy and is a graduate of the Navy Surface Warfare Division Officers School in Newport, RI in 1988.
